The interdisciplinary approach of behavioural medicine - that means the integration of sociocultural, psychosocial, behavioural and biomedical knowledge relevant to health and illness – is fundamental in understanding the determinants of the morbidity and mortality crisis in our region and more importantly to implement community based behavioural medicine health promotion methods.
On theBudapest Satellite meeting of the 8 th ICBM - August 29-31, 2004, Budapest, Hungary - we concluded that there is a need to strengthen teaching, research and system engagement in behavioural medicine in the countries of the region. Therefore participants of the satellite symposium decided to form the Central Eastern European Behavioural Medicine Network (CEEBM-NET).
The 1 st CEEBM-NET Symposium was held in Targu-Mures, Romania, October 14-16, 2005, where we agreed to transit our network into a Regional - Central and Eastern European Society of Behavioural Medicine (CEESBM). In Warsaw, Poland, 28 August, 2006 we had the Statutory Meeting of the CEESBM. Its official registration is under process in the Metropolitan Court of Budapest.
Central and Eastern Europe involves a colourful diversity of nations and cultures. History and culture of a region influence the ideas and concepts about health, illness and care. Since Pécs is attained the honour to be the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010, the main concept of the 1 st CEESBM conference will involve the spirit of the European culture. The conference will present the global and local faces of behavioural medicine (as well as of culture): common problems, opportunities, aims and a variety of specialities in the countries and in their sub-regions. Discussion about behavioural medicine in this sense can promote the understanding, cooperation and creativity in research, practice and education.
This regional meeting will provide an opportunity for researchers, clinicians and other health care and health policy professionals from the Central Eastern European countries to meet and discuss how behavioural medicine research and practice can be used to understand the health issues of countries undergoing rapid political and economic transition and how to address these health challenges in the future.
Pre-conference workshops / teaching seminars, introductory keynotes given by international, regional and local experts of BM and thematic symposia and roundtables discussions on the issues of epidemiology, clinical applications, community based intervention and health promotion, and education and training will help to discuss and plan our regional, as well as, the specific local activity of individuals working in BM and public health.
We do hope that the warm, Mediterranean atmosphere of the city of Pécs with its active cultural life will provide an excellent background for this rich scientific program for all the participants.
On behalf of the Organising Committee,
Dr. József Varga
Chair of the Local Organising Committee
Dr. Mónika Erika Kovács
elected President of CEESBM
